Market Optimism

Two decades after Rwanda’s genocide, the tiny East African nation is back in the news, but this time for very different reasons

The country’s economy has been growing in spades, leading the government to believe it can eliminate domestic poverty by 2017 and become a middle-income country by 2020. Indeed, observers have called Rwanda’s growth “a new model of economic development,” while over the past decade “deaths from HIV, TB, and malaria dropped by 80 percent.”

Chris Horst of HOPE International, recalling a recent visit to the country, believes that Rwandan entrepreneurs represent the future of the country.
